All DRAWN out of a body, I meant. Nevertheless, I've enjoyed your in-depth scrutiny of this grisly, groovy, unforgiving, ultimately hopeful novel. I shall continue to listen. Lavender Jack...Swooping On Down.

Overall, it seems you don't like this story on account of your unfamiliarity with abuse, real fear, confusion, and strength, all draw out of a body via intentional, serial victimization. Count yourself lucky. Also, not all literature is meant to be wholly pleasurable, or comfortable. Lavender Jack...Swooping On Down.

I understand why you feel as you feel in terms of this novel's bleak atmosphere, but as a person who has suffered extreme abuse, I can tell you that Norman's abuse isn't in fact cartoonish, but desperately, depressingly, terrifyingly real. I've more to say once I've finished this episode, but I suspect that your lack of history, where extreme physical abuse is concerned (unless I am mistaken, and if I am, my sincere apologies) has a great deal to do with your obvious dislike of this novel...a novel that I never forgot or underestimated after the initial read. I in fact have read it several times since. It is one of King's greatest efforts, as it presents abusers, the abused, and the intense pattern of loss, terror, agony, manipulation, and, dependency twisting between the two. I see Rose Madder as a story of ultimate hope and perseverance. More later. Lavender Jack...Swooping On Down.
